Small wind powered turbines are expected to become a popular form of microgeneration over the next few years.

Wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate electricity and a small turbine might typically generate around 20% of the electricity used in the home.

Weather conditions in the United Kingdom mean that wind power may be more cost effective than solar and of course by combining the two, the number of days when power can be generated will be maximised.

Turbines for domestic use can be mounted on building walls or on a pole.

Cost will be from Ł3000 upwards depending on size, whether it is a stand alone system or connected to the electricity grid.

Although not really any more obtrusive than a satellite dish, most planning authorities still require you to apply for planning permission, especially in conservation areas.
