Solar Power There are two main ways of using solar power in the home or small business: Solar Water Heating Solar thermal energy water heating uses collectors, usually roof panels, to heat and store water. Liquid heated in the panels circulates to a water tank. This system can be used to heat water heating water in the home or industrial and commercial buildings and for heating swimming pools. Currently this is the most well known and lowest cost technology and systems a can be installed for as little as £2,000, or less if you feel competent to do it yourself. Grants may be available to offset some of the cost and the system panels are best installed on a south, south east or southwest facing roof. Planning permission may be required particularly in conservation areas or for panels installed on roofs facing the street. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Microgeneration Solar Photovoltaic systems use daylight to generate electricity. This can be used to power electrical appliances and it may even be to resell any excess to the electricity supply company. PV modules are usually mounted on the roof and PV tiles may replace the normal roof tiles. PV panels or tiles should be located were they will be exposed to sunlight for most of the day ideally facing south. Cost will vary depending on size of the system and technology used. Planning permission may not be required except in conservation areas but it is important to check with your local planning department. Grants may be available.
