Micro - Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Until recently combined heat and power systems were mainly used in large scale developments and commercial premises but micro-systems are now available. A micro-CHP unit is really a combined water heater and electricity generator. Typically not much larger than a traditional condensing boiler, CHP units are gas powered and generate electricity via a small turbine with the heat generated used for the central heating and water heating system. They may be very cost effective, particularly if installed instead of upgrading to a modern condensing boiler. Domestic units are now available for around £3000. Excess electricity produced may be sold back to the electricity supply company.
