Biomass (Bioenergy) Biomass - or biofuels - are fuels produced from organic material such as energy crops and coppiced wood including willow. The carbon dioxide released when energy is generated is offset by the CO2 absorbed during the growing process unlike burning fossil fuels that unlocks the CO2 stored for millions of years. Domestic biomass systems generally use wood pellets or chips, larger scale systems use untreated wood products or energy crops. Domestic systems may be pellet or wood burning stoves or central heating boilers. Pellets are used for automatic feed systems. Stand alone room heaters cost from £1500 and a central heating boiler around £5000. Biomass systems will be most cost effective and offer most environmental benefits when the fuel is sourced locally.
